She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7
The Gospel of St. Luke provides the only description of where Christ was born, as it mentions him being placed in a manger. This suggests that Mary gave birth in a stable. Although many stables of this region and time period were built in caves, crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the nativity scene, have a diversity of stables and settings, including the most commonly used type of stable, an open-front wood structure. However, many artisans model their crèches after buildings and landscapes that are native to their homelands.
This exhibit includes a variety of crΓ¨ches that showcase different examples of stables and mangers. In addition, it also highlights the creation of a handful of crΓ¨ches that have settings customized to display the figures. These crΓ¨ches include, the Marcel Carbonel Santons of Marseille, France, Fontanini of Bagni di Lucca, Italy, the Neapolitan crΓ¨che by Cantone and Costabile of Naples Italy, and the newest additions to our collection by United States based Navidad Nativities: the St. Francis Nativity, with figures by Ulpe Wood Art and St. Maryβs crΓ¨che with figures by Original Heide, both from Italy.
Exhibition: Away in a Manger- The Creation of Nativity Scenes

Most of the Christians who live in Africa are in the Sub-Saharan nations (nations south of the Sahara Desert), though Christians are found throughout the entire continent. According to a Pew Study in 2018, Christianity is growing the fastest within African countries than anywhere else in the world. Christianity spread into Africa as early as the first century, particularly throughout Northern Africa, and continued right up until the seventh century, when armies practicing the new Islamic faith spread into Africa.
The next era of growth began in the 15th century, when many European countries, starting with Portugal, began searching for alternative trade routes to Asia. Europeans established trade posts along the western coast of Africa and sent missionaries to spread the faith. These missionaries brought their own simple plaster crΓ¨ches with them, and they later enlisted the aid of local artisans to create variations reflective of their own cultures and traditions. These local artisans used native materials that were both abundant and accessible β a tradition that continues to this day.
In recent years, Christians in several nations within the African continent have been subjected to persecution resulting in the displacement of millions and numerous deaths. Despite this, the peopleβs dedication to their faith is unwavering. It is in honor of their spirit and determination that the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is pleased to exhibit more than 50 works representing 23 countries across the African continent. This exhibit also explores some of the traditions and festivities that have developed throughout Africa to celebrate the season.

Join Yale Consort for a service of Lutheran Vespers. For at least the last eighteen centuries, some formula for prayer at the end of the day has been part of the Christian tradition. Though we donβt know precisely what the earliest Vespers looked or sounded like, certain themes have endured, including confession, gratitude, and light. Through the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, we explore these ancient traditions.
Free and open to the public.
Due to the off-campus nature of Yale Consort events, they will not be livestreamed. We invite you to join us in person as you are able.
Yale Consort, a newly formed professional vocal ensemble conducted by Professor James OβDonnell and sponsored by the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, provides high quality choral music for a series of evening services in local parishes and chapels.

Take Me As I Am: Redemption And Grace for the Discarded is an art exhibit premiering new mixed media works detailing the fight to preserve Houstonβs historic Third Ward neighborhood by contemporary Southern artist Lance Flowers. The title βTake Me As I Am,β is a reference to the hymn from the late 19th century. The title is also a spot on description of Flowersβ artistic practice. His process leads him to seek out and repurpose found materials once deemed trash or an βeyesoreβ to tell vivid allegories steeped in Southern tradition.
Free and open to the public.

The Bread of Angels: Wisdom and Music Behind Bars
The 1999 album, Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet, exists on zero streaming platforms, and few people have heard it. But its legacy is as relevant as ever. The Mercy Velvet Project is a rock opera, a re-creation of the album. The work explores what makes us human, our collective need for community to surviveβwith musicians and dancers moving as one. Through nine songs, a queer and femme cast explore different barriers to experiencing love. Learning that by giving and receiving the gift of mercy, we are able to find the bridge to survival, wholeness, and hope.
kamrDANCE, a dance and music company that prioritizes multidisciplinary musical storytelling, is hosting their first fundraising event for their multidisciplinary rock opera in progress, The Mercy Velvet Project. Join Choreographer/Artistic Director/Producer Alexis Robbins, Musical Director Christie Echols, and lead vocalist Aster Rhys at Katalinaβs Bakery in Downtown New Haven for an evening of sweet and savory treats, drinks, performances, a silent auction, and more! All proceeds go towards the creation, production, equipment, and touring of The Mercy Velvet Project.
Your $50 ticket includes: unlimited sweet treats by Katalinaβs bakery, savory dishes, two drinks (alcoholic or non), performances by Mercy Velvet Project cast members, the chance to bid on extremely cool silent auction items (like personal training, voice lessons, private performances and more), and networking with New Haven community members. Yes, there are vegan and gluten free options! All drinks after your first two are $5 per drink.
What to expect: *other than eating and drinking throughout the evening!*
6 PM doors open (food is first come first served)

Over twenty years after the albumsβ release, kamrDANCE and their collaborators expand upon Mercy Velvetβs legacy through their personal identities and todayβs political realities. The show tells the story of the album through tap dance as percussion, contemporary dance, original text, and instrumentation via bass, guitar, vocals, and electronicsβhighlighting our vulnerabilities, learning together how to find the antidote that is mercy, and in turn lead meaningful lives.
Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet is the music that Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with, the percussive rhythms and lyrics that inspired living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, alongside lyricist Deb Lili, and guitarist Lou Lili. Her fathersβ love and direction has deeply influenced the music Alexis listens to and the music she creates as a tap dancer. Now, Alexis, Musical Director Christie Echols, and their collaborators bring Live in Vain to audiences for the first time.
