Eastern Elegance: An Exploration of Classical Chinese Furniture

Join us at the Leslie P. and George H. Hume American Furniture Study Center at the Collection Studies Center, Yale West Campus, for a presentation by the furniture maker and educator Andrew Hunter. Known nationally for his engagement with Eastern traditions in furniture making and hand tools, Hunter will present on the history and craft of classical Chinese furniture of the later Ming (1368–1644) and early Qing (1636–1911) dynasties. Referencing images, full-scale joinery models, and examples of period Chinese furniture from the Gallery’s collection, Hunter will offer insight into how such objects were constructed and the influence Chinese furniture has had on European designs from the 18th century to the modern era. Generously sponsored by the Martin A.
